Self-Managed Upgrades & Maintenance
Learn about the importance of upgrading and maintaining self-managed MongoDB deployments.
Self-Managed Upgrades & Maintenance
Unit Overview
In this unit, you'll learn why upgrading and maintenance of self-managed MongoDB deployments is essential for resilience. Then, you'll learn and practice using the tools that MongoDB provides to support zero downtime or rolling maintenance. Next, you'll learn how to both upgrade a MongoDB driver for an application and MongoDB versions on a replica set.
Prerequisites
Lessons in This Unit
- Lesson 1 – Zero Downtime Maintenance with a MongoDB Deployment
- Lesson 2 – MongoDB Client Driver Upgrades
- Lesson 3 – MongoDB Server Upgrades
Parker Faucher | University Curriculum Engineer
Parker is a Curriculum Engineer on the Education team at MongoDB. Prior to joining MongoDB, he helped maintain a world class developer bootcamp that was offered in multiple universities. He is a self taught developer who loves being able to give back to the community that has helped him so much.
Caleb Thompson | Staff Engineer
Caleb is a Staff Engineer at MongoDB, working primarily on Realm education and documentation. He doesn't recall his life before MongoDB, but has been told he has previously served as an architect, software engineer, API designer, and curriculum design engineer. Caleb also loves teaching, rafting, wood working, and geology.
Vick Mena | Director, Curriculum
My name is Vick and I've been in the wild for over 25 years. I grew up at IBM working on the BIOS for the IBM eServer line in Austin, TX before moving to Wall St. I've worked on all phases of software development from low-level to middleware to UI but feel most comfortable in the middle. I also drank the devops kool-aid having moved a product line to AWS while at Dow Jones & Co with the help of an amazing team. I then pivoted into the secure space and worked on software/hardware reverse engineering. I always thought I'd eventually teach and this role lets me leverage all of my experience to lead this motley crew of passionate educators.
Welcome to this unit on self-managed upgrades and maintenance in MongoDB! In this unit, we’ll start by discussing the importance of upgrading and maintaining a MongoDB database. After covering some of the basics, we’ll go through the process of performing maintenance.
My name is Caleb
Performing upgrades and maintenance is a common process for any type of software. MongoDB is no different in that respect, and provides tools that reduce the downtime associated with maintenance.
This is sometimes referred to as zero downtime maintenance or rolling maintenance.
Rolling maintenance is when we perform maintenance tasks without losing high availability or performance for our users.
With rolling maintenance, application data remains accessible.
No revenue is lost due to downtime.
And there’s a reduced risk of system failure by applying updates or changes incrementally.
And these are just a few of the benefits.
In this unit, we’ll first cover how to leverage replica sets during maintenance and the importance of a pre-production environment. We’ll also give a high-level overview of how maintenance is performed.
Then, we’ll discuss how to upgrade the MongoDB driver for an application and cover some of the pitfalls associated with it.
Finally, we’ll go through all of the steps to properly upgrade MongoDB versions on a replica set.
Throughout this unit, you'll have plenty of opportunities to practice what you learned by completing quizzes and labs that present real-world scenarios. This way, you'll build your knowledge and get comfortable with the software at the same time.
Let’s get started!
